Thank-you for considering an externship with Calhan Veterinary Clinic! Calhan is about 35 miles from Colorado Springs, which offers all the amenities of a big city. We are adjacent to the magnificent Pikes Peak Region, and tourist opportunities abound!

During your time at Calhan Veterinary Clinic you will have an opportunity to work on more than one or two species of animal! We are a true mixed-animal practice, and certain opportunities do vary with the season. Our patient base consists of approximately 80% small animal and 20% large animal. Within that frame, our small animal portion is about 70% canine, and 30% feline. Our large animal caseload is comprised of equine, cattle, porcine, camelid and small ruminants.

We perform a large range of procedures ranging from preventive care exams to complicated medical procedures and dental extractions. Our dental program is well developed, and we perform full mouth digital radiographs with every routine Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. Our team consists of 2 Certified Veterinary Technicians, 1 receptionist, 1 graduate veterinary technician, and 1 Certified Veterinary Assistant. Our certified technicians and our doctor have received extra training in small animal dentistry. Our doctor has also received extra training in equine dentistry and veterinaryacupuncture. We offer a range of pain management protocols and consult with board-certified professionals in every field on a regular basis. We also have a mobile surgeon who travels to our practice to perform orthopedic surgeries.

We offer (new in 2020) anesthetic monitoring equipment, a CR unit for small and large animal radiology, and the services of a board-certified radiologist interpreting many of our images. We have an in-house lab, utilizing Abaxis (Zoetis) equipment, and a variety of in-house ELISA testing for rapid results. We are computerized and paperless. We also utilize Lifelearn Sophie for assistance with cases. We offer ambulatory services although most of our cases are seen in the clinic. We have 2 indoor heated stalls, an outdoor round-tub and squeeze chute, and equine Power-Float

Our hours of operation are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, and 8:00am to 12:00pm alternating Saturdays. Hours are dependent upon the termination of any case we are working on at the end of the day; 5:00 and noon are not a guarantee! You will be required to be present on all those days, and it is advisable you arrive by 7:30am to confer with the doctor regarding the cases for the day. Dress code is a clean dress shirt and clean jeans without holes or excessive wear. Scrub tops or lab coat are to be provided by you. During the pandemic of 2020 we provide the necessary personal protective equipment to keep staff, students, and clients safe. We request that you not use your cell phone during work hours. We offer 2 land lines by which you may be reached or may use in case of emergency.

Your externship may be a one or two-week block of your choosing. Housing may be arranged in advance. Calhan offers 2 restaurants and a Subway™.
